Why Yahoo Fires Carol Bartz?

September 7 in Technology Market by Indra Setiawan No Comments

Carol Bartz, the CEO of Yahoo since January 2009, has been fired by the company. Bartz is the former CEO of Autodesk which aimed to clean the company after they rejected Microsoft acquisition offer and decided to go alone. It is because the investors were unhappy with Bartz’s performance. Their share price has raised $1.15 and the company still hasn’t find the way to make a new money source and stabilize the finances.

Since Bartz took the helm, she seemed to be confused on how to reinvent a web company into a digital media powerhouse. Actually, Bartz maybe is an effective manager, only that she has no vision to lead Yahoo. The one who is perfect for Yahoo is Steve Jobs, but co-founder Jerry Yang failed to bring him and finally hire Carol Bartz.

Actually, the main reason for firing Bartz is because she failed to create the shareholder value.  Before her appointment, Yahoo’s share price was only $11.59. When the market closed on September 6, it was $12.74. It proves that it doesn’t matter whether you are a founder, or maybe the most experienced CEO on earth. If you can’t increase the shareholder value, you are failed. Jerry Yang and Carol Bartz should already understand about that now.

It will be removed from Google News and Labs soon, and it will approach to web content display on other tools. Fast Flip will be in its two years this month and was in the top list when sorting Google Labs project by popularity. Unfortunately, we all see that the tool didn’t show anything from the start.

However, it may be a success tool if you make it on tablet. Just like when CNN acquire Zite or when AOL release the Editions, they are focusing to optimize the mobile reading. News apps such as Flipboard and Pulse are seeing that they have growing audiences. Beside that, we all see that tablets is still continue growing as a great content consumption gadget. That’s why Google might better simplify the browsing news for tablet than a conventional web.

For your information, Fast Flip is only one of the nine products that will be discontinued by Google Labs. Google announced it right after they release their second quarter earnings in mid July. September 5 in Technology Market by Indra Setiawan No Comments

As the day of the launching of iPhone 5 is getting closer, there is another clue about its true shape today. A speculation from MacRumors when they see a third party cases for iPhone 5, they see that the case is so much wider. So, they strongly suggest that there will be a 4 inch screen on the iPhone. The case here is different with the one that showed up yesterday which is a soft case. It will be wider and thinner and with the possibility of 4 inch screen.

MacRumors even provide us with the specific measurement of the case. If the iPhone 4 is 2.31 inches wide with 3.5 inch screen and 1.95 inches wide, this case is significantly 2.224 inches wider. So, if it is the right case, the iPhone 5 will really have 4 inch screen.

However, we all know that Apple is very secretive about their product, so it might be a fake case specification which is passed to manufacturers because of the previous leak. However, still it is an info which you can add to the other iPhone 5 clues. All of the previous clues said the same thing: wider, thinner, and a larger screen will be available on the iPhone 5 with a tapered bottom.

A moment ago, ereaders and tablets were embraced by young adult males in the U.S., but now those gadgets have found new market to conquer: women and older users. According to the data from Nielsen, women are now interested to ereaders. There are sixty one percent of ereaders today are owned by woman.

For your information, last year, the percentage was only 46 percent. That is why many e-magazines for woman said that their sales are better at Nook than iPad. Apple Won’t Change After Steve Jobs

August 25 in Technology Market by Indra Setiawan No Comments

Steve Jobs’ resignation letter published on the internet a couple hours after New York Stock Exchange had closed today. It was a simple, direct, and moving letter, just like what you expect from a man like Jobs. It can be seen very clear that the moment has been planned before, as Apple revealed that Tim Cook will be the next CEO just a moment after the letter.

However, Jobs won’t totally leave Apple. As the letter said, he will still contributing to Apple’s success. For me, I can’t see there will be anything changes around here. It will be a hard time to move to the Cook era. Just let the market criticize why Apple not announcing the successor earlier, but we all know they are not a company that likes to say anything before the time.

For your information, we have been in the ‘Cook era’ before. He led Apple on 2004 and 2009 when Jobs treating his pancreatic cancer and liver transplant. We don’t even recognize the difference right? The great thing from Jobs’ business is that he has created a business that can run just the same with or without him at the helm. The same era with different head? How do you think?
