It is a serious problem when an individual or activist group broke into your organization’s office and raided confidential materials. Whether you have a respectful non-profit company with a long track record or a state-owned institution, you still have to prepare your company from such intrusions. There are four key steps to retain credibility and confidence before and after a breach.
1. Think ahead and Anticipate
In soccer, Offensive play is sometimes the best defensive strategy. In online security, companies are using pre-hack peacetime to address identified weaknesses.
2. Say Something
Communicate what you know and what you want to investigate. Total silence will only create a frustration and it is helpful for antagonists.
3. Know the Law
There must be a different reporting rules and regulation in every state. These rules are governing when the organizations have been victim of a breach and must notify the public. Make sure your security team knows about this.
4. Remember, You’re not Alone
There are thousands victim of security hacking if not millions. It is not only your company who has been violated, but also the employees with their social security number. Don’t be afraid to tell the story for cooperation.
